A guy I know in town worked with Dave Barton (the prancing moose guy!) to design these, and they’ve got them for sale here: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I had a 2004 3.0 All BRG 5 speed manual X-Type with the sports package (sports suspension
, spoiler, bucket seats). I have never seen another one like it and I’m super sad I had to sell it (too many cars). Le Sigh.

I’m sure these won’t get abused.

I’m gonna have to qualify my current DD for this.
‘01 525it, 5 speed, factory m-sport, in topasblau. but unfortunately the yellow sticker won’t go with the blue paint

I’ve never seen another ‘73 CL450 running around with a capacitor fed charging system and a skychismo special paint job. So probably.
I’ve actually never seen another 450 running around.

My pickup is probably less common than my car. The fun part about having a seldom-seen vehicle is the subtlety, and talking to people who actually know what it is and care.

I drive a 2005 Subaru Outback Sedan 3.0R. I’ve never seen another exactly like it; mine is white with tan leather interior and no spoiler on the trunk. I’ve actually only seen a handful same year sedans, but either different color or with a spoiler on the trunk.

Silver auto Forester? Not even close.
What’s the opposite of a unicorn? A cow?

Do I get a pair of those and put one in each fender?
I’ve got a 2012 Mazda5 with the 6MT, in Copper Red Mica, a one year only color for this bodystyle. I think there were only a couple hundred made with this combo of color and transmission so I think it qualifies. In seven years I've only seen one other 2012+ Mazda5 with the manual.

I have not seen it, but there is apparently an Identical cameo beige 1966 4 door post Malibu in my town. I’ve been asked if I bought my car from “Dave”. That’s two of the 17,000 exactly like it. Not exactly a unicorn but how many can there be?
![]() 01/24/2019 at 12:37 |

My S600 is apparently one of only 27 cars ever optioned like it. That is a US spec S600 with the full Designo options package, the AMG appearance pack, and no distronic cruise option.

I don’t expect I’ll see very many Regal GS’ s around. Buick sold 14k Regals last year 50/50 split between the sportback and TourX wagon, and I assume the GS will be a pretty small percentage of the sportback sales.

My car is one of 3,135 with a manual in North America. Not sure what it takes to make a unicorn, though.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 12:49 |

Yes! You need them.

Apparently only 1% of G35 sedans are 6MT models, but it’s not like a black-on-black 6MT sedan is nearly impossible to find .
My old car though had a 1-year-only interior colour and they didn’t sell many with Toreador Red paint so it could have very well been a unicorn.

Haha!

I almost bought a manual G37S sedan.

My o2 3.0 in silver was a manual didn’t see too many, my current 2011 bmw 535 manual is pretty rare.

My Z3 Coupe could apply, but I debadged the car already so itll stay that way

My car is black. There aren’t too many Honda Integra’s of this gen left, most of them were white, so, I’d say its p retty rare..I guess..?
![]() 01/24/2019 at 13:07 |

Yes... T hese are stickers, not badges, but I wouldn’t put them on my ‘Shoe either.

The Volvo is pretty rare: 240 Wagon + Turbo engine + 4MT/OD that still works. Most of them are white though. Sure wish Dave Barton still had his other stickers for sale since some period-correct replica Group A stickers would look great on the rear window.

Well, I have to wake mine from it’s slumber for an electrical repair on the house and it’s currently hovering around 6 degrees Fahrenheit outside so I’m hoping I don’t blow up an ABC line in the cold. I’m gonna attempt to warm the garage to above freezing before I hit the starter but I am anticipating a trip to the dealer via flatbed.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 13:53 |
|
V12 W220 on a flatbed definitely isn’t a unicorn :)
In another decade or so, I suspect roadworthy examples will be rare to the point where you’ll get attention at MB shows.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 14:02 |
|
That’s the plan, I want to keep it for long enough to the point where it’s viewed like an old 450 SEL 6.9, sort of a weird factory hot rod.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 14:18 |
|
V12 W140s , easier to live with, are already unicorns too. W220s might be even more so. I think we are going to have an entire generation of MBs with lower long term survival rates.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 14:24 |

If my car was a unicorn , I wouldn’t sully it with a bright yellow sticker that gives people the perception that I’m a fast and furious ferari race boi who puts Ferrari badges on an old BMW.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 14:42 |

Depends on your sense of humor, and exactly what kind of unicorn it is.

Imagine old S600s selling for more than thier original asking prices at auction in 50 years...I was watching Barrett Jackson at the bar a couple weeks ago and I was absolutely floored when I saw 3 old Camaros bring in more than $600 ,000 combined. Absolutely ridiculous.

Good point!
![]() 01/24/2019 at 14:55 |

Man if that was tiny and a badge instead of a sticker I’d be down with it, assuming the 1502 qualifies.

Get them as magnets for grins!
![]() 01/24/2019 at 15:51 |

Apparently less than 700 2001 E55's were imported. Then if we get technical and picky; add the red/black interior and ventilated seats... I’ll give you 6 months to find another one with the same options. You won’t.
So based on what everyone else is saying, yeah I guess it could be considered a unicorn
![]() 01/24/2019 at 16:34 |

No car you’ve ever owned has been a unicorn.

It makes me a little crazy when people say that a car is rare because of some ridiculous (non-performance) option package or whatever. For me, “rare” comes down to generation/body style /motor/transmission and maybe exterior color. Numbers of survivors/availability has to do with it, too.

Heading that direction, strange that the wagon is rarer
Z4M Coupe is 1 of ~1800 in North America
328xi Wagon (MT) is 1 of ~500 in North America

I too hate the paint color, interior combo, options game. Folks including that information in a sale are less driving enthusiasts and more likely hipster collectors.
Chassis, engine, drive-train , transmission.

My E90 M3 is 1 of 3,135 in North America with the manual.

My 335is 6MT Coupe was one of 714. Don’t know how rare my 2005 9-2X Saabaru 5MT was but it wasn’t common at all (hence the cancellation). My 1996 Integra GSR 5MT and 2015 GTI 6MT weren’t rare in general but in metro Detroit they may as well have been unicorns. I knew of only a handful of guys with GSR/Type R Integras in the area.
What do I drive today? A 2018 Grand Cherokee, to go with our remodeled house and newborn son! I have to admit I really do like the GC and it’s a temporary hiatus alongside some investment opportunities. Hope to have something from Stuttgart or Conner assembly next Time I’m back in the game.

I used to have a kinda unicorn. a 98 Eagle Talon TSI AWD Two tone red and black. Semi Rare as they didnt make a ton of them.
My RX7 is a unicorn to me. Ls1 and T56 and as soon as i blow up the rear diff a IFS Ford 8.8
![]() 01/24/2019 at 22:29 |

Update! After charging the battery and heating the garage up, the car started right away and didn’t even break a little bit! The rear valve block appears to be inoperative, but I had plans to rebuild it in the spring anyways so it’s not super upsetting.
![]() 01/24/2019 at 23:11 |

Crazy, maybe you have some kind of mojo with that car. That’s one I am glad I have been able to resist - I just don’t have the time, skills, space, tools, or patience to deal with it. W221s onward look like Corollas in terms of maintenance drama.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 01:32 |

I completely agree. I'd say a true unicorn is one that most people will never see outside of a show or museum. Numbers wise, I'd probably say under 500 for an entire production run.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 09:13 |
|
Yeah, that’s a good number. I do love the unicorns that are otherwise ordinary, nondescript cars, though.
They made 1,270 Carrera GTs - it’s probably okay to call that a unicorn. 1,315 F40s were produced - I saw one in person at SEMA a decade ago, but I’ve never seen one in person. One did show up to a recent, informal car meet in town!

I don’t know what it is about this car that I’m so enamored with. This will most likely be my last V12 S class I buy, unless I can find some insane deal on a CPO S65 when I buy my next Benz in 2021/22. I’ll most likely just end up in an S560 though.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 10:33 |

I didn't realize they made so many! But yeah I would definitely call them unicorns.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 10:53 |

They all seem to depreciate pretty steadily - I am surprised W222s are as cheap as they are already, lots of car for the money.
There’s a low mileage S600 on BaT right now:

That guy is a BaT legend. He pretty much exclusively deals in V12 W220 models, with the occasional W221. I’m hoping to cash in on the W222 price drop after the W223 is announced in 2021/22. If I can find an S65 for under $65,000 I might get it, but a $40,000 2 year old S560 would be extraordinarily hard to pass up on.
![]() 01/25/2019 at 11:49 |

Yeah, look at W221 prices now, evaporated. Once the 223 is out, S560s will plummet as well.
I am in an E lease right now, up in a few months - one of my possible thoughts for replacement is a depreciated W222, but I am afraid of how little it will be worth when I pay it off, not too long after W223 is here . Although to be fair, it has lost so much now, it will probably just depreciate like a normal 45K new mainstream car.
